Under the Blooming Tree

Sakura Tree

Let me just share to you something before I proceed to our topic. Back in high school, I had a classmate who was very fanatical of Japanese culture. Her name was April. April was so infatuated to it that she would actually prefer to sing “Kimigayo” (Japan’s national anthem) than “Lupang Hinirang” during flag ceremony.

I didn’t like her at first for she was so loud and mean, but we eventually became friends. I think it’s inevitable because we were also seatmates. Being a passionate “feeling Japanese girl” that she was, April was fond of discussing Animès, Mangas, Japanese artists, pop stars, and everything about Japan with me. Our conversation revolved around it so I was amazed about how she described Japan which according to her, was rich and indeed beautiful.

April used to sing Dimensions of Love, a soundtrack from the hit animè “Tenchi Muyo.” I think it was originally sung by Kuroda Kayoko. This song was about a girl who was patiently waiting for her one true love on springtime – a season, when Sakura trees (Cherry Blossoms) bloom.

When the cherry blossom starts to bloom
Meet me here in my lonely room
We’ll find a passion filled fantasy
And this time you will stay with me

When our class decided to choose date sketch as our topic for midterm, I was actually worried that I might not be able to write anything since I haven’t found him. I mean, being a certified member of NBSB (No Boyfriend since Birth), I honestly don’t have an idea of how a romantic date was like. I’m not really a mushy person, and you know that.

“Your name is Girlie, but you’re acting like a dude.” This comment, which I’ve heard from people, hundreds of times now, can perfectly explain why I considered this activity as a challenge. And yes, now is the time for me to unleash my romantic side. Oh, come on.

After chewing on a bone on what my dream date would be like, I’ve finally decided where to go (Much thanks to April). So, if I were to date someone, I would probably take him to Yoshinoyama (Mount Yoshino) in Yoshino Town, Japan, which is famous for “Hanami” (Cherry Blossom Viewing).

Yoshinoyama

Yoshinoyama

Besides an estimated 30,000 Sakura trees, the area also offers a rich history and several temples and shrines. Cherry trees can be found all along the slope of the mountain, but the upper area is most appropriate for a rest or a picnic under the blooming trees.  So, If I were there with him, I would love to have a stroll in the park and set a picnic after. For me it would be great for we would have time to know each other better. We would just talk about stuffs,  eat great food, laugh, and goof around. You know,  I really want this date to happen. Since I haven’t met him, this date remains a dream. If this would become a reality, I might as well sing “Dimensions of Love” with my  special someone, under the cherry trees full of pink blossoms.

Soon, with the start of spring
We’ll know our hearts are changing
Leave the hurt behind
I’ll be true and kind
Be the best you’ll ever find

  1. You’re right, it’s not a date sketch though but you’re able to write a good article that talks about how romantic it would be if someone is holding your hands beneath the cherry blossom. Japan as a romantic place sounds a little off because for me the country is always described as a peaceful den so probably it’s a resting place for the soul, for dead people. Kidding aside I like this one. While waiting for him, have this 95 to accompany you.

  2. NO BOYFRIEND SINCE BIRTH or NBSB, count me in! I love the place, Girl. It looks quite romantic there. I wish, I wish with all my heart that the guy who’s looking for you would bring you there someday. And please take many pictures. Hmm.. Now I’m thinking, I also want to have a date with him (who ever he is) there under a sakura tree eating noodles (just kidding).

    Share with your date a 94%. :)

  4. It’s nice to be with someone you like under the Sakura tree. You will just sit there talking about anything and watch as the wind blows down some leaves of the tree. It’s like confetti, I love it!

A good article with kilig factor moments! Nice one from a boy like you, kidding!

  5. Howdy! ;)

Wow. I learned something from reading this article! Nice Girl! :) You gave me a different perspective of Japan, Japan, Japan. Good write up. Nothing to worry about being a certified member of NBSB league. You’re still fine and will always be fine…as long as you have a date every Heart’s day! Hey, I’m dating Khem-Ann and maybe other batchmates this Valentines Day so my idea is not really romantic. Maybe platonic. hahaha! Shall I give you a grade?

    Ok, 95 from a passer-by!

  6. Thank you for the pictures. Now I can’t help but dream and wake up with dried saliva dripping from my lips.

Look it’s great she provided you with inspiration and based on your description she must be a nice girl; but April needs a good bonk in the head and a healthy infusion of nationalism. When Rizal said “kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan” I think he didn’t meant Japan as the bayan. I just wish people would have more love for this country and for its people no matter how corrupt they are. Remember the same evils exist everywhere in the world.

Fortunately I was awestruck by the idea of such a wonderful date. Exceptionally romantic yet so wonderfully simple. Just think how memorable it would be if you’ll have your first date there. So lucky. Anyway give me a ticket and tourist visa for Japan and (96) is all yours.

  8. Hey Girl, you don’t need a lousy boy friend just so you can write this article. I’m not a Jap hater but a few of the things that come to mind for me about Japan is Pearl Harbor, Makin Atoll (Gilbert Islands in the Pacific Ocean), Midway, Kamikaze, Hara Kiri, Seppuku, etc. Of course, Japan also reminds me of my favorite camera (Pentax), stereo (Kenwood), Sony PS2, Nintendo DS, DVD & DivX (JVC, TEAC), Meiji chocolate, etc. That place you described is a natural heritage site. I wonder whether you can have a date or picnic in that site. I suggest you go to Japan and find out. Who knows you may find your hentai friend (joke). Good delivery girl. [94.9]

  10. I was very entertained reading this. I like how this one is written. Like I told you many times, your writing skills improved a lot. i can tell because you have been my partner/groupmate since 2006 (2 and a half years ago). I agree with Nicko’s comment last time. You are one of the best writers in the class.
I can’t help but also wish that i can have a simple picnic under the pink blossom tree.

This is so unique. You haven’t experienced dating before and then your dreaming to have it in Japan? WOW! this is so cool Girl! :) ) You seem to be influenced by the power of April.

Infairness it’s kind of hard to pronounce the place.

Keep on dreaming, like everyone used to say, it’s free to dream big.

I’m looking forward to seeing you in Japan being with a Japanese Guy. hahaha..

  16. The greatest strength of this article is that it doesn’t need a fat wallet. Only a chubby heart filled with love. : D
I love the tree and I love the line that goes: “When the cherry blossom starts to bloom Meet me here in my lonely room we’ll find a passion filled fantasy
And this time you will stay with me.”

  17. Yikee.. you dating a Japanese guy in the future? that was cool.. very unique. =D

well, this place (Yoshinoyama)which is really hard to pronounce for us.. I’m kinda familiar on this one. especially the Cherry blossom Tree. My sister was a fanatic for all anime and japanese cartoons. I saw this Cherry blossom tree when I joined my sister watching cartoon anime last week. The story is like, A fairy with a big hat standing under the Cherry blossom tree and spreading some flowers (from the tree) to the children, to take away the black magic of a witch. so the Cherry blossom tree on the story has a power to do everything with the help of the tree.. hehe.. I wished the fairy on that story will also bless and give you a date on Valentines day. +.0 haha..

This one is very unique, (the place and the story) compared to all the article that i had read for now. two thumbs up for this one. +.0

Grade: 93 for you girl.. =D

  21. NBSB? Who says it’s not fun? (hehehe, no bitterness there.)I like the article as you are able to put a clear picture of the place in the minds of your readers. I kind of also like the idea of watching cherry bloosoms with someone I love (very romantic indeed!)

I am an anime’ fan as well and into Japanese cuisine, but I’m very partial to Japanese guys (they are not my kind of men) so I hope that if ever this dream date becomes a reality, you are spending it with a Filipino (any race will do, except for Japanese). It’s just an opinion (or a suggestion, whatever you may wanna call it, hehehe)

And speaking of Japan, I think you need to talk to my sister, she definitely loves that country, for reasons I don’t know. She might give you some tips. Again nice article.
